Transition out of Utkatasana

05 January 2015: Interviewee: Laruga Glaser

utkatasana-transitionI don’t know about you but for some reason even though I have been practicing Ashtanga for ages I still have trouble figuring out what I am meant to be doing as I leave Utkatasana and Warrior II. Who better to call on than Laruga Glaser to demonstrate what it should look like, allowing for individuality of bone structure, tension patterns, girth and such like of course 🙂

Currently Laruga heads the Mysore program at Yogayama in Stockholm, Sweden and teaches workshops and retreats internationally. I caught up with her recently in India and we filmed 3 shorties (this is one of them and Transitioning out of Warrior II (B) is another) and a great interview (here), which includes a superb demo and explanation of the key features of the jumping through to seated and jumping back. If you would like to find out how to practice with her take a look at her website http://larugayoga.com.

Ed Clark has been teaching a very nice handspring version of this transition for a long time. As for the video above – rather her neck than mine, why not relax the neck and shoulder muscles a bit more?
